Dementia care

Dementia affects over 750,000 people living in the UK and the figure is expected to rise above 1 million within the next 10 years. It’s a condition that most commonly affects the elderly but with proper support and care it shouldn’t stop people from living a fulfilling day-to-day life. Gill, our General Manager has worked in dementia care for over 25 years. Gill says, “Dementia sufferers need more than kindness. It can be a frightening experience and understanding what people are going through is essential to being able to help them. Understanding behavioural difficulties and helping people to live a full and rewarding life requires specialist training.”

We follow the principles of person centred dementia care. This philosophy helps us to see the person rather than their illness or abilities they may have lost. We have adopted the pioneering ProActive System developed by Jackie Pool Associates, one of the UK’s leading specialist in dementia issues.

Working with Jackie Pool, we have introduced a series of new initiatives to Springfield including ‘help yourself’ bistro areas for residents and their friends, new signage, more personal touches around the home, including ‘memory montages’ outside bedrooms and timelines from past decades in common areas. These are all designed to promote interaction.
